Where are your products made?
All of our organic skin care products are formulated and packaged in-house, at our facility on Georgian Bay, Ontario. This allows us to have control of every step of the process and assures our customers that they are receiving the very best product, of the highest quality.
What is the shelf life of your products?
Our organic skin care products are made with fresh natural ingredients, when you order and will stay fresh for up to 6 months after opening. As they will react to extreme heat or cold, please store your Chiluna products in a cool place and out of direct sunlight to maximize product life and efficacy.
How do you preserve your formulations?
Products made with the addition of water (like lotions and creams) must have a preservative system to protect against yeast, moulds and bacteria. We preserve our formulations with a wonderful plant-based product by the name of Leucidal Liquid – a broad spectrum preservative. It is derived from radish root ferment and approved by ECOCERT for use in natural skin care products.
Do you use fragrance?
We never use fragrance or parfum of any kind. Fragrance oils are mostly synthetically manufactured scents, designed specifically to mimic the aroma of a natural product. They are artificially created, with artificial substances. Our body & skin care line is scented with only pure essential oils. Essential oils contain the essence of natural botanicals and offer aromatic properties as well as countless aroma-therapeutic benefits.
Why do your products come in glass bottles?
Since most plastics demonstrate varying levels of leaching chemicals, especially when heated, we are proud to offer all of our organic skin care products products in glass bottles and jars only (with the exception of our Sore Muscle Balm, offered in tin containers). We believe that making the shift from the chemically laden products of traditional skin care to a cleaner and safer alternative should include every aspect – right down to the packaging.
My skin is quite sensitive and I have to know every ingredient. Do you list all ingredients?
Yes! The most important thing to us is having an effective, clean and natural skin care line that is free of harsh chemicals, and believe that complete transparency is essential in everything we create. We have nothing to hide so we list ALL ingredients found in our products, and why, here on our ingredients page.
What is the difference between ‘natural’, ‘certified organic’ and ‘wildcrafted’?
Natural implies there is nothing artificial in the product and it is cultivated without the use of chemicals or GMOs and harvested with the integrity of the plant in mind. Certified Organic means grown without the use of chemical fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides and are free from genetic modification or enhancements. Must be certified by a third party organization. Wildcrafted includes plants that have been grown wild in nature without human intervention. Collected from their natural indigenous habitat, ideally they have been harvested following wildcrafting guidelines.
Why can I only use the natural body scrub 1 or 2 times per week?
Exfoliation helps slough off dead skin cells, remove dirt and keep pores looking smaller – all for a more glowing complexion. By exfoliating too often you can actually irritate healthy new skin cells and cause the surface to become red, dry, patchy and sensitive. Severe breakouts are also common with too much exfoliation. It’s also important to remember to save the sugar and salt scrubs for the body and use something much gentler (such as oatmeal, or a plain old facecloth) for the face. Exfoliating only once or twice each week is all that is needed to achieve a soft, supple and healthy glow. Trust us, in the end your skin will thank you for not going overboard.
Are facial oils better than facial lotions?
Your skin type is the best determinant for the moisturizing system you will want to use. Both products are equally amazing and we feel there is a place for both in any skin care routine. Oils deposit nutrients, protect the skin against environmental effects, are ultra healing and restorative, won’t clog pores (really!) and can neutralize oily/combination skin. Lotions, on the other hand, contain many nutritive ingredients, (like aloe vera, vitamins D&E, shea butter and keratin) are lighter, hydrating, softening and can plump up the appearance of the skin. Depending on specific needs, you could use only oils, only lotions, or a combination of both. Some use lotion in the morning and oils at night while others use oil underneath lotion. The trick is to understand what your skin needs and be willing to experiment a little to find the right combination.
Why is cleansing with soap bad for my skin?
Cleansing is essential for your skin’s long-term health. It helps to clear away excess dirt, sebum (oils naturally produced by the skin), bacteria, sweat, cosmetics, dead skin cells and any pollutants that come in contact with your skin. Cleansing with soap, however, will change your skin’s balance by stripping the protective oils that act as natural barriers to the elements leading to dry, irritated or sensitive skin. The key is to use a gentle moisturizing cleanser every day.
Which lotion/cream should I use for extremely dry/irritated skin and how often can I reapply?
Everyone’s skin is different and has individual needs. But we have had great reports of success from our customers who have used our Whipped Organic Body Butter for severe dry patches as well as overall dry skin. However, our Hand & Body Lotion has also been a popular choice for effectively relieving dry/irritated skin. Both products are wonderfully nourishing and hydrating and can be applied as often as needed!
Why don’t you use Grapefruit Seed Extract as your preservative?
Grapefruit Seed Extract is full of anti-oxidants, flavonoids, Vitamin C, citric acid, phytosterols and tocopherols but, by itself, is NOT a preservative. We have researched this extensively and can find no studies showing that unadulterated Grapefruit Seed Extract acts as an effective preservative. Only GSE that has had synthetic chemical preservatives added to it (this is a common practice) offers some protection against antimicrobial activity. As we use Aloe Vera and hydrosols (both water bases) in many of our products a broad spectrum preservative is an absolute must for safety and efficacy for our customers. GSE just does not provide that.
