IMG_3875wbj1The DIY Christmas gift scene has been revolutionized and seems to be all the rage these days.  It’s understandable, though, as there’s clearly something special about receiving Christmas gifts that are unique and handcrafted.  Making your own custom holiday presents, or even having them made-to-order adds meaning, thoughtfulness and personalization to the spirit of giving.  It lets people know they’re important to you.  And thankfully, the days of ugly hand-knit sweaters and stale Christmas cake are gone.  There are literally hundreds of wonderful ideas floating around the internet, making customized gift-giving easy, affordable and stress-free.

We jumped on the DIY wagon several years ago and haven’t looked back – we love it.  It’s our way of personalizing our holiday giving for those we love and is always appreciated by everyone who receives something from us.  Last weekend, my family and I started the process of making our famous Homemade Chocolate Coffee Liqueur.  Each year, we start making it in November because it takes a few weeks to mull and we want to ensure it’s ready by Christmas, to gift to our family and friends.  This year, getting started on our yearly tradition has inspired me to share our Liqueur recipe, and a few of my other favourites, with you.

Interested in trying your hand at DIY gifting this year?  Need some help narrowing it down to a few easy ones?

Here’s a list of my top 5 favourites:

  1. Chiluna’s Skincare Packages are, of course, top of the list.  Our natural skincare products packages are handcrafted and made-to-order.  They make the perfect gift for anyone who enjoys superior, high quality natural skincare with premium natural ingredients, sublime aromas and texture and exceptional performance.   A fabulous gift for those who love to be pampered.

  2. Homemade Chocolate Coffee Liqueur as I mentioned earlier, is our own family tradition.  It’s super easy to make, always turns out beautifully and is thoroughly enjoyed by our loved ones.  There are plenty of recipes out there for this amazing liqueur but I believe ours is the best so I’ve shared the entire DIY here on our Facebook page.  It really is exquisite, and very tasty!

  3. Homemade Vanilla Extract makes an amazing thoughtful gift.  It’s extremely easy to put together and everyone uses it in the kitchen so you can’t go wrong with this one.  Just 2 ingredients, 8-10oz bottles, labels, a little festive ribbon and voila!

    To make:

    - Slice open 7-10 vanilla beans lengthwise and stuff them into a 8-10oz bottle
    - Fill bottle with dark rum
    - Infuse for several weeks
    - Label and decorate bottles festively

  4. Stress-Release Bath Salts is a fabulous and rejuvenating formula that is inexpensive and simple to make.  A wonderful gift that is sure to be appreciated, especially during the holiday season.  Using fancy jars, adding labels, decorative ribbon and perhaps a candy cane or two will easily complete the festive look.  Find the recipe here on the Chiluna DIY recipe page.

  5. Hot Cocoa Mix in a Jar is still a much-loved and well-received gift, by all.  Who doesn’t enjoy indulging in a chocolaty decadent drink over the holidays?  There are countless fun ways to put this great mix together but I’ve shared my personal favourite with you, below.

    - 2 ½ TBLSP unsweetened cocoa powder
    - 4 TBLSP sugar
    - pinch of salt
    - enough chocolate chips to cover the sugar layer
    - 2 Hershey’s candy cane white chocolate kisses, chopped
    - 1 candy cane, crushed
    - mini marshmallows to fill remaining space in jar

Layer the ingredients in the jar in the order listed above.  Decorate the jar however you please.  Be sure to add instructions to pour contents (except the marshmallows) into a saucepan with 2 cups of milk and heat.  Pour in a mug then add the marshmallows.
