lifelessons2Today is my birthday.  I am 45 years old.  Wow!  When did that happen?  Where did all those years go??  I’d never looked too far into the future so I hadn’t really envisioned what things would look like for me at 45.  Even though I don’t feel 45 today I must admit it did kinda sneak up on me and seems just a little surreal.  It hasn’t been the easiest journey up to this point but it has been mine and I don’t regret any of it.  So here I am, mom to a beautiful teenager, married for 20 years and launching into my own business venture.  It’s exciting and wonderful and I’m happy to be exactly where I’m supposed to be.  Still…..45?  When did that happen??

I’ve seen others do this and thought it might be fun to compile a list of my very own Life Lessons – one for each of my 45 years – and share it with you.  Some of them are a bit cliché but have been such great learning curves for me I had to include them.  Enjoy!

  1. The most important relationship in your life is the one you have with yourself.  How you talk to yourself, treat yourself and see yourself reflects how you are in the world.
  2. True friends are a gift.  Treat them as such.
  3. You must create your own reality.  There is no one else on this planet that is more qualified than you.
  4. No one is perfect.  No one.
  5. FEEL your emotions.  Embrace them, acknowledge them, learn from them but don’t LIVE IN them.   Respect when it’s time to move on.
  6. Your children only get one childhood.  They learn how to navigate through this world from you.  Make it count, this one’s not about you.
  7. “Everyone gets hit with their own bag of hammers”, so never compare your life to others.  You have no idea what their journey has been.
  8. Complaining about the weather is a complete waste of energy.
  9. Clean house often.  Get rid of anything that isn’t useful.  Clutter weighs you down in so many ways.
  10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.
  11. Time heals almost everything.  Just give it time.
  12. Read as often as you can.
  13. No one else is in charge of your happiness.  Take charge.
  14. There is no such thing as multi-tasking.  Truly.
  15. You become who you spend your time with.  Choose wisely.
  16. Never purposely make anyone feel small, including yourself.
  17.  “Don’t take life so seriously. It’s not like you’re getting out alive”.  This is most definitely my favourite quote, to date.  I really try to live & learn by it.
  18. Take deep breaths.
  19. Moderation.  Moderation.  Moderation.
  20. Don’t take anything personally.  My hardest lesson – still in progress.
  21. Be eccentric.  Don’t wait to wear that funky hat, that multi-coloured coat or those crazy boots.  (yes, I have crazy boots)
  22. Be open.  If you don’t learn something new everyday you don’t grow.
  23. What other people think of you is truly none of your business.
  24. Always over prepare then try to go with the flow.
  25. Sometimes, things just don’t make sense.
  26.  How people treat you is their Karma.  How you react is yours.
  27. Your gut is always right.  Learn to listen to it.
  28.  Make peace with your past.  It’s the only way to move forward.
  29. As women, we are here to support and empower each other, not to discourage and compete with each other.
  30. Forgive.  Seriously.  For your own sake.
  31. Live with passion.  Find what fuels your soul and incorporate it into your life.
  32.  Ice cream.  Need I say more?
  33.  Don’t save it for special occasions.  Wear the fancy lingerie, use the nice sheets and drink from the expensive wine glasses… just because.
  34.  Read ‘The Four Agreements’.  Regularly.
  35. Go for the ‘joy freebees’ as often as you can.  A long hug, a great book, time with friends, a walk in the park, a pet and intimate moments with loved ones are all great examples.
  36.  Feel the fear and do it anyway.
  37. Nope, life isn’t fair.
  38. There are 3 (and many times, more) sides to every story.
  39. Never underestimate the importance of a smile.
  40.  Ask questions.  As many as necessary.
  41. When in doubt, take a deep breath and drink wine while eating chocolate.
  42. Try not to take stock of all the good deeds you’ve done, it will only lead to disappointment.
  43. Using the ‘ostrich’ approach in difficult situations never works.  Ever.
  44. It’s not humanly possible to please everyone.  Start with yourself.
  45.  I’m not done learning.
